We are a group of Melrose residents concerned about the rapid pace that the City is approving new, large-scale redevelopment projects in a few small city neighborhoods. These projects are being approved with little to no notice to residents in the affected neighborhoods as well as residents and taxpayers in general. A volunteer board (Planning Board) is responsible for approving these project proposals. Your elected city officials are not involved in the process.
We understand that there is a regional housing crisis. But we also feel that all Melrose residents, and especially those residents in neighborhoods impacted by large-scale developments, should have a say in what their community looks like. We want to find ways that encourage development and a development review process that leaves Melrose a better place for all of us.
On this website you will find information about development projects that are currently under review - including the 40B proposal for 28 Greenwood Street and the 107 unit building proposed for 14 Tremont St - or have been approved since 2022 by the Planning Board, along with information about upcoming meetings.

Developers plan to blast out ledge next to the historic Wyman house to build a 40 unit apartment building. This blasting will happen within 200 feet of the Julian Steele House (senior housing).
The developer held a public meeting on June 28th 2022. The meeting was recorded and can be viewed by clicking HERE
While the Mayor has sent letters to Mass Housing identifiying multiple issues with the size and location of the project, including the blasting of ledge, Mass Housing has identified that the project “appears generally eligible under the requirements of the housing subsidy program”
The Board of Appeals will hear the multiple variances being requested for the project at their March 22nd, 2023 meeting.
